Main event: So long, softball. It won't be with us in the 2012 London Games. It's possible we'll never see softball in the Olympics again. If not, the U.S. team intends to bid adieu with one of the most dominating performances in Olympic history. How far ahead of the field are the Americans? In eight games leading into today's final against Japan, the Americans have outscored their opponents 57-2 and allowed only eight hits in 48 innings. Tonight, they'll go for their fourth consecutive gold medal.
Other highlights
* Shades of Mia Hamm and Co., the U.S. women's soccer team has made it all the way back. It will face Brazil in the gold-medal match.
* David Oliver, a graduate of Denver East High School, will try to overtake world record- holder Dayron Robles of Cuba in the men's 110-meter hurdles. With the Athens gold and silver medalists knocked out with injuries, Oliver and Robles have qualified No. 1 in each of their respective heats.
